Interactive Notebook Your Key to Success In 7th Grade English – Mrs. Muehlfeld’s Class
Have you ever heard yourself say… • I’m sure it’s in … • My locker. • My book bag. • My room. • I thought I … • Finished it. • Turned it in. • Gave it to my mom to sign. I can’t remember What we did Yesterday. I can’t find my notes, homework, old quizzes! OR
Get it together with your…. Interactive Notebook
A place where all of your work – notes and class work will be kept. Your own personal textbook! What is an Interactive Notebook???
Why They work!!! This notebook style uses both the right and left sides of the brain to help you sort, categorize, remember, and creatively interact with the knowledge you are gaining. The more you process information the more you begin to understand it. This leads to longer retention.
How Do I set up my Interactive Notebook? We will do most of the set up work in class. • The Cover – The upper right-hand corner should contain your first and last name. The rest of the cover should be decorated using drawings, pictures, stickers, decorative tape, or other items to help you identify your IN at a glance. The decorated color is also important to help you feel ownership. You will be more likely to use the notebook as intended if it is attractive to you. Think about your Decorations Carefully!
Table of Contents You will need to skip a couple of pages at the beginning of the notebook for your table of contents. This will help both of us find specific items quickly. It is important that you keep this current and complete. All items that should be in your notebook will be listed on the whiteboard. This should help you keep up your “Table of Contents”.
Left Side – Right Side • Each lesson will have a left side and a right side. • Each page will be numbered so we will always be on the same page. • Let’s start by numbering 1 through 25. Left sides are Even!
Left Side • Left is for Learning!!! • The Left side is Mrs. Muehlfeld’s side. • Left sides have even numbers. Left sides are Even!

And we’re numbering… 25 to 50 Remember…. Left = Even Right = Odd
Color and Decorations • I want you to use as much color in the IN as possible. To help you with this, you should bring colored pencils and pens with you each day. Just as the decorations on the cover make you more likely to use the notebook, color will do the same and help you remember important information.
Right is for “Reflection” A chance to work with what you’ve learned and “show what you know” Examples of Right Side Assignments
And we’re numbering… 51 to 75 Remember…. Left = Even Right = Odd
Attaching Items • When you attach items inside your IN, please use tape or glue sticks only. Staples do not work well and both my students, and I have cut our fingers on the staples in the past. Liquid glue does not work well either as it takes a long time to dry and sometimes causes pages to stick together.
Comic strips Sensory Figures Acrostics Venn Diagrams Story boards More Examples of Right Side Assignments
And we’re numbering… 76 to the end… Remember…. Left = Even Right = Odd
Maintaining the Interactive Notebook • No ripped out pages or torn corners • No doodling that doesn’t relate to notes • Date and number each page (since we numbered them together, this should be half done already).
Final Recommendations On your own, you will make connections on the right-hand side. Sometimes I will tell you what I would like you to do to make the connection, but most of the time, it will be up to you on your own. Other examples of connections: Drawings Re-writing in your own words Poems, song lyrics, magazine pictures Etc. You may look at examples and suggestions any time you need help coming up with an idea.
