  1. Design and Optimization of Very Low Frequency Antennas MESA Interns: Manuel Leyva, Ramiro Rodriguez – Southwestern College Supervisor: Alberto Rodriguez SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific Introduction to Very Low Frequency (VLF) Antennas Antenna Design/High Voltage Programs Research goals • VLF means 14 – 30 kHz • Purpose: world wide communication to submarines when submerged. • Navy’s Location: Ten transmitting sites around the world. • Why VLF/LF: • Penetrates sea water (somewhat) • Some bandwidth • Propagates to long range • Perturbed little by things that affect others modes: • Solar events • Nuclear events • Day/Night • Obtain basic knowledge of VLF Antennas. Investigate different aspects and components of VLF antennas such as bushings, insulators, and conductors. • Optimize antenna impedance and radiation pattern performance parameters EZNEC: Antenna Properties Optimization 4NEC2: Antenna Design Tool Electro: Electrostatic Tool AutoCad: Geometry Creation Tool Vlf Antenna Steps To perform Research: • Study of reference monopole antenna at 1GHz • Study of possible size reduction and resulting impedance and radiation pattern performance parameters with 1GHz monopole • Design of Very Low Frequency using commercial simulation tools • Optimize design parameters to come-up with the antenna providing best antenna performance • Compare with different simulation software such as the MININEC, NEC, CST, HFSS • Practically fabricate antennas and experimentally verify the simulation results based on the available resources PowerPoint presentations on Very Low Frequency Antennas were constantly presented to receive experience and feedback from supervisors. Sketch-Up: Design program Prototyping Solding Acknowledgment: Results: We want to thank Alberto Rodriguez for his support in this project and also for the use of his Antennas and Microwave Lab (AML) . This research internship was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF DUE 0653234) and the Lipp Family Foundation. The antenna prototype that was built to revise and conclude our research and experimentation process, matched the measurement parameters and data that was obtained in the antenna design programs utilized.
