Return to thefundamentalquestions What is the role of libraries in the information society and electronic knowledge-based economy?
Factualpredomination of the electronic (form) overthe paper (form) An electronic book(content of thebook) is: • available regardless of the reader’s place of residence • available regardless of time: • day or night • the year it was published • cheap storage and availability • multimedia • automatic transformation, which means it can be personalized • non-linear (hypertextand hypermedia) • interactive 200 GB hard drive costs 200 zł You can place 111 million pages on it Pages stored one on top of the other would be 11 km long Pages stored in a row would be 33.000 km long They would cost (only paper) 4 million zł
Digital libraries Freedom of possession meaning access to texts does not depend onhaving a carrier In the Future – e-paper meaning all books of the world available on one e-page
Digital libraries Time spent on-line by Polish internauts: • 10% ofinternauts – more than20hours a week, • 19%of Polish internauts – from5 to 20hours a week, • 44 %of Polish internauts – from1 to 5hours a week. Poles spend on-line 4 million hours per year
Reading books • 51%ofPolesover 15 do not read books at all • 32%ofPoles read books occasionally (up to 6 books per year) • 17%of Poles read more than 6 books per year Poles spend 400 million hours per year on reading books
Comparison 9 million of Poles surf the Weband read 4 million of Poles surf, but do not read 5 million of Poles do not surf, but read BUT: 13 millionof surfing Poles spend 10 times more time on the Internet than 15 millionof reading Poles spend on books
Generationchange Educationbackground Generation in Power “Nation of the Future” People aged 19-24 People aged 45-60 11%have higher education 49%are studying at universities
Why do peoplestudy? People study becausethey want to work in the knowledge-based economy • Discovering knowledge • research • Using knowledge • design (products, services, processes) • implementation • re-organisation • Passing on knowledge • teaching • consulting • advising Services based on knowledge
Knowledge-based service • If after a natural change of generations, halfof the society wants to make a living by providing services based on knowledge, then: Knowledge-based services must be a business activity
Warning The uneducated half of the society The educated half of the society Society makes a living working physically in the private sector and pays taxes to support a public sector Provides knowledge-based services for “free” and is supported by the taxes Such an economic model is absolutely unrealistic
Specificknowledge The greater the knowledge in society, the bigger the need for knowledge
Liability • The more knowledgewe give to the society for free, themore the educated part of society willdemand • Therefore there will be a need to set highertaxes for the uneducated part of the society Positive feed-back always leads to instability Such a system must collapse !
Knowledgesector Therefore The knowledge sector must be a business sector • Purchase – sale of products and services based on knowledge • Income accumulation for national budget by selling knowledge • Income accumulation for knowledge companies Economy based on Knowledge
Future of the libraries If paper books are not going to last then libraries and reading rooms will not last either In future libraries, it won’t be the books that are the most important - therewon’t be any – but thelibrarians
Librarians Consultancy for the excluded ones for the active ones • what kind of knowledge to buy in order to not to be excluded • what knowledge to create and sell to support their families New role, new competence
Conclusion Paper libraries will not last – they will turn into museums Librarians will last,if they adapt to new challenges of theelectronic economy based on knowledge
