History • On June 24, 1797 the mission was dedicated by Father Lasuen. • In 1805 there were 1,100 Indians living at the mission • In 1816, Thomas Doak, was the first American settler in California and help with the mission. • In 1906 an earthquake greatly damaged the church
Interesting Facts • It was the 15th mission • The Indians were buried in blankets without coffins. • The church was the biggest of any mission. It was 72x188 feet and had 3 aisles. • The mission was built right over the San Andreas Fault.
