  3. Public Transportation • Is a $61 billion industry; employs 400,000 persons • Buses provide a majorityof all trips • 27 Commuter Rail lines • 37 Heavy Rail lines

  4. Other Modes • More than 30 Light Rail/Streetcar systems built since 1981. • Paratransit provides services to those with disabilities orthose otherwise unable to use fixed-route service. • 37 Ferryboats operate in U.S.

  5. 10.7 billion trips were taken on public transportation in 2013.

Facts at a Glance • More than 7,100 organizations provide public transportation in the U.S. • Since 1995, public transit ridership has increased by 35%--higher than the increase in population and the nation’s highway use. • $88 billion is needed just to bring existing public transportation facilities up to SOGR.

  7. Economic Benefits • Every $1 invested in public transportation = $4 in returns • Every $1 billion invested supports and creates 36,000 jobs • 74% of funding for public transit flows through the private sector
