Key mounting challenges • US mounting plate is required to provide excellent location accuracy (± 0.2mm and ± 0.01˚) • Positional accuracy of graphite target segments. There are many mechanical interfaces that stack up to determine the positional accuracy of a graphite segment. • Target support/flange • Target manifold/Outer Can/spacers/inner tube/graphite fin • Target deflection under self-weight • Design of target supports • Radially stiff, but compliant enough to allow assembly of tubes together • Particularly challenging for conical tube sections
Features that could affect operating life expectancy The features below have an increased chance of failure/leaks, and we would aim to minimise the numbers of these features where possible. Increased numbers of any of the features below could increase the chances of failure. • Target windows • Flange / seal attachments in helium pipework • Electrical (Ceramic) isolators in helium pipework • Remote couplings in helium pipework • Flexible couplings in helium pipework • Welds

Conclusion • Several challenges, but no show-stoppers identified • Future work includesaddressing some of the challenges identified including developing: • Design of target supports for maximum stability/robustness/ease of assembly • Manufacturing route for: • Up-stream helium manifold • Long target tubes • Simple, robust and accurate interface between target and horn
