LBNF mounts, interface with horn A and Manufacturing Challenges

This document outlines the key challenges and components that may affect the operation life of the LBNF target conceptual design. It discusses the design and manufacturing challenges, as well as features that could impact the operating life expectancy. The conclusion highlights the identified challenges and suggests future work to address them.

  1. LBNF mounts, interface with horn A and Manufacturing Challenges CDR - Aug 2019 Phillip Jeffery & Joe O’Dell

  2. Introduction • Brief overview of target conceptual design • Outline of key challenges • Identify components that might affect the operation life of a target • Discuss areas that pose design/manufacture challenges

  3. LBNF Target Conceptual design Target Horn Module

  4. Target components Beam position monitor (Hylen device) Graphite Bafflette with BBA features Ti Target mounting flange Graphite target core Ti target container As Long As Realistically Achievable. We plan to build a 1.5m prototype, with a view to developing a longer version of the target (between 1.5 and 1.8m) for the production target 180mm

  5. Interlocking fin at one location prevents rotational of segments Target core location and supports Helium containment and target support can Target segment support/location fin Fins extend beyond segment slug to protect the hottest part of the target, and reduce pressure drop over the fins Graphite target segment Relief on the outer face of the fin for ease of insertion into the inner tube Relief on the outer face of the fin for ease of insertion into the inner tube Flow divider tube Flow divider tube support

  6. Target components and helium flow Helium inlet pipe Beam position monitor US window Bafflette with BBA features Electrical isolator Helium cross-flow manifold

  7. Target mounting features 2 x helium remote disconnects for horn replacement US mounting plate (horn based) 2 x target alignment dowels 2 x helium remote disconnects for target replacement Target module Target exchanger docking feature

  8. Key mounting challenges • US mounting plate is required to provide excellent location accuracy (± 0.2mm and ± 0.01˚) • Positional accuracy of graphite target segments. There are many mechanical interfaces that stack up to determine the positional accuracy of a graphite segment. • Target support/flange • Target manifold/Outer Can/spacers/inner tube/graphite fin • Target deflection under self-weight • Design of target supports • Radially stiff, but compliant enough to allow assembly of tubes together • Particularly challenging for conical tube sections

  9. Features that could affect operating life expectancy The features below have an increased chance of failure/leaks, and we would aim to minimise the numbers of these features where possible. Increased numbers of any of the features below could increase the chances of failure. • Target windows • Flange / seal attachments in helium pipework • Electrical (Ceramic) isolators in helium pipework • Remote couplings in helium pipework • Flexible couplings in helium pipework • Welds

  10. Seals, weldsand flexibles • 2 Target windows • 2 Flange / seal attachments in helium pipework • 2 Ceramic isolators in helium pipework • 4 Remote couplings in helium pipework • 8 Flexible couplings in helium pipework • 8 Containment welds • 28 welded pipework joints

  17. Conclusion • Several challenges, but no show-stoppers identified • Future work includesaddressing some of the challenges identified including developing: • Design of target supports for maximum stability/robustness/ease of assembly • Manufacturing route for: • Up-stream helium manifold • Long target tubes • Simple, robust and accurate interface between target and horn
