Fovea • Acuity – the smallest spatial detail that can be resolved • Located in the center of the retina • 1 degree angle • Only made of cones • Daylight vision, fine visual acuity, and color • No rods present • Star gazing – night vision
Advantages and Disadvantages • High resolution in the center • Low resolution in the periphery • Why? • High resolution requires so many resources • We personally don’t have enough photoreceptors to see everything in high resolution • You change your focal point to see in high resolution
Peripheral Vision • Does not use the fovea • We can’t focus on anything using our peripherals • Visual crowding • Objects in our peripheral vision seem cluttered and hard to identify
Results As the object (letters) moves away from your focal point, it gets more difficult to see with clarity
