  3. The Beginning of Kabarett • Überbrettl, gegründet auf Berlin, Januar 1901 • (literally Superstage, a play of words on FreidrichNeitzscheÜbermensch, Superman) • Später als bekannt Buntes Theatre

  4. Kabarett in WWI Germany • Had no political satire within performances. • Many found that it wasinappropriate duringwar. • Others found that it wasneeded as a distraction.

  5. Kabarett in Weimar Germany • Much more politically driven at this time. • Mix between mindlessentertainment and current political commentary (Daily Show) • Since the war had just ended censorship was severely lacking, Cabaret commonly took on topics like politics and sex.

  6. Political influence • For a short time after the war, Government tried to make Cabaret strictly anti-nazi. • Before the war and during, the Nazi party tried to control Cabaret Material, this resulting in underground areas popping up. (Think speakeasys)

  7. DerBlaue Engel • Directed by Josef Von Sternberg • First major sound film • Brought fame to Actress Marlene Dietrich
