Climb to Kaiser Alejandro Pujol June 27th, 2009
The story On Saturday June 27th I accomplished one of the greatest cycling achievements of my life: the Climb to Kaiser, out of Clovis (Northeast of Fresno) into the Sierra up to Kaiser Pass. A dawn to dusk bicycle ride of 155 miles with 14,000ft of elevation... I actually finished in full darkness. The ride was brutally insane, physically exhausting and mentally draining. The scorching heat reached 122ºF at times. Overall I burned more than 10,000 calories in 15 hours. . To me getting to the top of Kaiser Pass was not the toughest part. That was just a physical game for which one was already prepared (or not). Getting back down on time was mentally the toughest. The descent allowed coasting for most parts but it still included some "minor" climbs. Tamarack Ridge being the worst. When I got to the Shaver Lake rest stop at 6:30pm and with still 44 miles to go, I toyed with the idea of quitting. That gave me only two hours to sunset and I had to average 22mph, quite an unrealistic fast pace. However, on second thoughts I decided to keep going. If darkness had to stop me, that would be the end... but at least I would fight to the end. At the next rest stop I bumped into three guys equipped with headlights. I told myself "they are the key to my success" and I stuck to them like glue. We formed quite a team, alternating the pace lining until the sunset forced me to the rear of the group --I only had a tail light--. Surprisingly, my legs were still responding rather decently. Much worse was an annoying headache and a sore butt. But even suffering comes to an end. We got to the finish line at 9pm in total darkness and in the middle of the applause of the volunteers. My next challenge? Well... I think I am ready to take a double century now !!

This is to show: • That ladies can do it too... and much faster than I can! • The beautiful background with snow capped mountains (unfortunately when I got to this point the photographer was already gone...)
Mr. Brian Schaffer took almost three hours less than I did.... he is da bomb!
