US Must Mobilize! • U.S. mobilizes against Central Powers: • Ensure Allied repayment of debts to U.S. • Prevent Germans from threatening U.S. shipping • To build an army… • 1917 – Congress passed the Selective Service Act • Men registered with the gov’t in order to be randomly selected for military service. (the draft)

  3. Convoy System • German U-boat attacks = threat to U.S. & British merchant ships • Protection= Merchant ships were escorted by destroyers. • Introduced by U.S. Vice Admiral William Sims. • Cut losses in half!

  4. Americans Just In Time! (Russian Revolution!) • 1917: Russians pull out of war • Germany shifts armies to Western front, bombarding the Allies • US arrives in France • Gives much needed physical, mental, and moral support

  5. American Expeditionary Force (AEF) • An American Infantry troop led by Gen. John Pershing ■ “Doughboys”: U.S. Infantry men who were from rural areas and small towns Gen. John “Black Jack” Pershing

  6. WEB DuBois Encourages African Americans to Get Involved… • Hoped participation would lead to greater respect and equality. • The Great Migration – blacks migrated North for new war-industry jobs. • -- Escape racist South • - Farming bad in the South
