  2. Glory and Sacrifice • By the winter of 1914, war in all its glory and ugliness had engulfed Canada • Stories of heroic efforts and noble sacrifices by Canadians on the battlefront and on the homefront

The Darker Side • The war exposed sexism, racism and xenophobiathat many Canadians had to endure • Some Canadians were denied their civil rights and were regarded with suspicion • Some used the war to make huge profits off of war industry • The loyalty and contribution of other Canadians were called into question

  6. Your task • Find a partner (or two) in your current seating group • You will be given a Wartime Controversy to research • Work together to complete the section of the chart (for your controversy only!) • You will have approximately 15minutes

  8. Let’s Mingle! • Once your section is complete, see Ms. McKnight for issue approval • When you hear the bell, visit other groups around to room and exchange information until your chart is complete

  11. HEADLINE SUBHEADING A good subheading provides more information to support the HEADLINE Often explains why the event is significant; the effect of the event Is smaller than the Headline

  12. Your Turn Use your completed chart to create a collage of eight headlines related to controversial issues from the homefront that you would have created over the duration of the war to sell your newspaper.
