Business Driven Information Technology • Information Technology (IT) has enabled organizations to conduct business in radically different and more effective ways. New business models have emerged. • New channels of supply and distribution are emerging. • New electronic marketplaces and exchanges are becoming commonplace. • The infrastructures of firms and industries within which they operate have been permanently altered.
Business Driven Information Technology As future business professionals, students will need to know : • how to find and use data and convert it to useful information and knowledge to make effective decisions (Excel, Access, FrontPage) (hands-on) • the management, process, and technology issues important for the success of IT initiatives and implementations (lecture/cases)
Course Objectives The specific objectives of BUS 391 are to help students learn about and understand the following: • The role of information systems and technology in organizations, particularly in business settings; • The strategic opportunities afforded organizations through the effective use of IT; • The specific components of an IT infrastructure including hardware, software, and networks;
Course Objectives • The role of IT in supporting managerial decision making and the specific technologies that are employed; • The role of IT in supporting information and knowledge management and the specific technologies that are employed; • The role of IT in supporting important business processes such as Supply Chain Management (SCM), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Enterprise Resource Management (ERP); • The role of IT in defining emerging business models such as electronic commerce and the specific technologies that are employed.
Critical Business Success Factors To be successful in today’s economic environment, you must: • Know your customers. (CRM) • Work closely with your business partners. (SCM) • Know your organization inside and out. (ERP)
