Setting • Based on your work in class Monday, what are your thoughts on the setting (time and place) of your novel? What historical period(s) shaped your novel; what historical period(s) did your novel shape? The setting and place of our novel Fahrenheit 451 is in America, somewhere in the future. We approximate it to the 1990s as one can infer from the technology that was used in the book that the society in the book is a little more technologically-advanced than when the book was written in 1950. The 1950s was an era where music and cars were popular and many people read condensed books and the author tried to criticize this trend in society, as people are starting to get confused about the true meanings of literature. The 1950s was also during the cold war era . Due to the imminent threat of war and the possibility of a nuclear warfare, the author had shaped his novel based on the notion that America would constantly face the threat of nuclear bombs used against them.
Themes • Censorship • Individuality • Ignorance to experiences • Guilt • Desensitizing
Development of Themes • The author shows us the development of the character throughout the story, from a person who was totally ignorant of what his job really aimed to achieve (censorship through burning of books) to a person who wants the society to break free from the grasps of censorship. • Thus the author purposely lets the main character, Guy Montag, start of as an ignorant person so that he can show us that most people are unaware of censorship and that is why censorship used by the government is quite effective, since people are unknowingly affected by it.
Development of Themes • The author makes the effect of censorship seem very bad, such that people are totally ignorant of what they are missing from books, and also he makes Guy Montag, the main character of the story, one of the only few who are against the government’s censorship scheme, which supports the “Individuality” theme. …Conformity develops individuality?
Linkage to American Culture • The novel seems to be criticizing censorship in America and is probably showing how censorship can effectively be used to stop possible revolutions or disconsent with the government. However, we feel that although censorship can produce harmful effects, it may not be very prevalent in the American culture as there are other places in the world where things are more heavily censored, such as China.
