  3. Objectives Students will • Identify the characteristics common to all mammals • Explain how mammals are adapted to different environments on earth • Distinguish among monotremes, marsupials and placentals

  4. Characteristics of Mammals • 1) Endothermic (warm blooded) • 2) Mammary glands to produce milk • 3) Hair • 4) Specialized teeth • 5) Well-developed Lungs • 6) Complex nervous system • 7) Internal fertilization

  6. Mammal Types Monotremes Examples: • Duck-billed platypus • Spiny anteater Characteristics • Smallest group of mammals • Found only in Australia and New Guinea • Lay eggs with tough leathery shells • Mammary glands

Mammal Types Marsupial Examples: • Kangaroos • Koalas • Tasmanian Devils • Wallabies • Opossum Characteristics • Most carry young in pouch • Embryos develop only for a few weeks inside • Young born without hair, blind and not fully formed • Crawl into pouch after birth where they complete development

Mammal Types Placental Examples: • Humans • Mice • Rats • Horses • Elephants Characteristics • Largest number of mammals • Umbilical cord connects embryo to placenta • Food and oxygen exchanges via the umbilical cord • Gestation varies with types of placental (ex: human 40 weeks; elephant 2 years; cats 9 weeks)
