The Good for Kids Program is Australia’s largest childhood obesity prevention program

Effects of Obesity are chronic and acute Ref: Wolfenden et al (2010)
Obesity Socioeconomic Disadvantage Obesity can contribute to a vicious cycle of disempowerment & disadvantage for vulnerable families.
Strategic position of Human Service Organisations Services are well placed to assist families create healthier home & family environments: • Support provided for a large number of families over a long period of time • Opportunity to identify unhealthy aspects of the families lifestyle and provide assistance • Primary prevention focus & understand the difficulties families are experiencing • Are experienced in supporting and building skills, knowledge and capacity of families
Survey of Managers Managers agreed that: • Families would find it beneficial (100%) and acceptable (85%) to receive healthy eating and physical activity assistance from their service • Healthy eating and adequate physical activity are important for the health and wellbeing of children (100%) • supporting families to lead healthy lifestyles was part of their organisational role (97% )
Healthy Living for Families strategy Included components found to be effective in improving organisational practices: • Organisational policy and procedures. • Staff training • Telephone support calls • Organisational Resources • Performance feedback

Evaluation • Pre-Post study design • Eligible managers and staff were invited to participate • Gathered information about: • Provision of healthy eating and physical activity support provided in the past 3 months • Acceptability of the intervention
Results All results are statistically significant (p<0.01)

Staff Results- Acceptability • Majority of staff found all components of the strategy useful • telephone support calls (93%) • training (100%) • Resources (100%) • All staff (100%) said they would recommend the training, resources, and telephone support to other Human Service organisations
Manager Results- Acceptability • 97% of managers agreed that: • Staff benefited from the training & resources • Families accessing their service benefited from their involvement in the strategy • All managers (100%) agreed that they would recommend the training, resources, and telephone support to other Human Service organisational managers
Limitations • A number of limitations exist: • Utilisation of an uncontrolled trial design • Possibility that staff felt compelled to report positively • However magnitude of change suggests that an intervention effect did occur
