REU Week 3 Nancy Zanaty, UCF
Problem • To classify ADHD brains from normal brains using fMRI analysis.
Background • Functional connectome- Map of brain’s functional neural system • Connectome architecture is common across most individuals but with unique features with different patterns and strengths • 60-80% of all energy used by brain occurs in circuits unrelated to any event
fMRI • Images capture the brains functionality. Focuses on the resting state (default mode network) • Frequency of BOLD ( Blood-oxygen-dependence-level)fluctuations in brain activity • Generates image of voxels(3-d pixels) • Resting brain images show fluctuations in fMRI signal that are correlated across functionally-related areas
Analysis of images • Result of fMRI scan placed into statistical map which indicates the points activated in the brain • Problem: Low resolution, noise, interference of non-functional activity such as head movement, and other physiological factors • Analysis used to correct for this and find the most significant regions of activation
