Uncertainty Increases the Perception of Privacy Risks Antti Oulasvirta, Tiia Suomalainen, Sakari Tamminen Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT University of Helsinki and Aalto University, Finland
Online experiment (N=1,911) • Manipulated information told about data use • WHO Antagonist (private, public, hidden) • WHAT FOR Intention (negative, neutral, hidden) • 9 scenarios • Keylogger • On-body sensor • Facebook account • Home video surveillance • Health records • Mobile communications • Credit card • Phone • Public space video surveillance
Your only computer contains a device that records everything written on computer’s keyboard to a file. [ANTAGONIST] You know that your employer has a possibility to see the file. [INTENTION] You find it likely that the employer wants to monitor if you are sharing confidential information regarding your job to non- employees.
Findings in a nutshell • Knowing who reads data decreases concerns, unless it’s an organization • Knowing why decreases concerns as well, unless intention is negative • Knowing the intention decreases concerns more than knowing the user • Keylogging caused highest levels of concern
