  1. Module 1.3: Network Systems Geert Heijenk Pieter-Tjerk de Boer, Nirvana Meratnia, Jan Kamphuis February 28, 2013 Geert Heijenk

  2. Requirements Geert Heijenk • 12 (+ 3 math) ECTS Module for CS, EE (1 out of 2), and others (elective). • Open network infrastructures and embedded networks • All layers: • physical (e.g., Shannon limit, error correction, propagation) • link (e.g., medium access control, retransmission schemes, switching) • network (e.g., routing, addressing, router architecture) • transport (e.g., congestion control, flow control), and • application (email, web, peer2peer, web2.0) • Both: • basic principles and • operation of key protocols (of the Internet) • Also: design aspects • protocol design & implementation • network monitoring and measurement • performance modeling and evaluation.

  3. Problem-based learning ??? Geert Heijenk  Challenge-based learning

  4. How to teach / how to learn? Geert Heijenk • Observation • observe (measure) how real networks are working (Wireshark) • Colstructie (Hoorcollege transforming into Werkcollege) • learn to understand basic principles • learn how real networks (the Internet, sensor networks) are working • Werkcollege • learn how to model networks, and how to evaluate network designs using these models • Challenge • obtain in-depth understanding of key principles by designing them • get motivated / forced to study theory • Self-study • study book, reader, and/or online lectures • Integration Project • learn to design and implement networking systems, protocols, and applications

  5. First design Wk 2 Wk 4 Wk 6 Wk 8 Wk 10 • Weekly theme (9x)3 days: • observation,- colstructie,- werkcollege, • challenge,- self-studie, • - test? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Math 5 weeks x 2 days spare Integration Project Geert Heijenk

  6. Network Systems in 9 themes Geert Heijenk • Identification of important topics • Structuring into 9 themes • But: • math has changed from 5 x 2 days to 7 x 1.5 days (roughly) • we have found suitable study book, but with slightly different organization • some topics already in module 1.1 (part introduction, crypto) • weekly testing may be too much

  7. Resulting weekschedule Geert Heijenk
