Overview • Modules will be a key component to the Inventors Workshop, providing a means towards intrinsically motivated, hands-on student explorations. • Modules are diverse, versatile, and collaborative in nature
Classification • Two main kinds of modules • Primary - specific and novel subjects, aiming to push the boundaries of what is possible. • Secondary - consist of axillary topics that support and enhance the primary modules. • Subject topics • Lab/equipment use and procedure • **apply to many different primary modules • Other classification criteria • Level/Complexity of spaces used (clearances if necessary) • Academic vs. experimental learning
Module Media • Written text with hyperlinks • Web pages • Videos/images • Online courses • Academic papers • DIY articles • Quizzes/Knowledge checkpoints • Anything else
Module Pages • Module page components • Introduction • Overview- module classifications • Expectations for Knowledge Gained • Background / Definitions • Module Resources • Related projects • Core content • News and Recent Developments • Notes • Collaborators • Ideas and Feedback
Collaboration • Collaboration is essential to module learning and development, and will be fostered through: • Collaborator participation list • Module notes section • Module hyperlinking • Forums/Discussion boards
Module Library • Online wiki library • Organized based on tags within module overview section • Subject • Lab/spaces used • Collaborators • Primary/secondary • Rating • Alphabetically • Home page highlights new/highly rated modules • Physical space- core IW level 1 space • Library of finished products/ physical aspects of modules • Basic tools
Evaluation • Modules can be evaluated on a variety of criteria by an independent, accredited source (depending on module). • Professors, Industry Professionals, other students • Can be graded/ranked, and achieve university credit within Inventioneering • Evaluation methods • Test on subject matter • Expertise with tools and equipment • Examination of finished product • Analysis of module (if 2nd, 3rd iteration)
Strategy • Build up a collection of secondary modules • Will make it easer to create and provide inspiration for primary modules • Target resources • On campus labs and facilities • Student clubs and organizaitons • Industry • Existing module-type resources • Get students to start developing primary modules • Build off of secondary module library • Target students and groups • FURI, STARS, EPICS, IDSA, Innovation Space, etc • Advertise to foster general student interest • Could be incorporated into certain courses • Open Source additions throughout process
Example Modules • Torque Controlled Fixed Gear Bike Motor
