  2. 2009 Dark Tobacco Variety Guide *F or A refers to use as fire-cured or air-cured variety. F/A indicates either use, with predominant use given first. Relative yield and quality scores given on a 0-10 scale, with 10 being best for the predominant use. Dash (-) means that resistance level is unknown or not rated at present.

  3. Very similar to KT D4LC Same genetics and disease resistance as KT D4 Different seed selection Medium Race 0 and Race 1 black shank resistance No black root rot, TMV, or wildfire resistance Medium maturity KT D8LC

  4. PD 7302LC • Rickard, 2008 • Similar to KY 171 • Good quality • Good yield potential • Race 0 BS resistant • No Race 1 BS resistance • Black root rot resistant PD 7302LC Danny Miller Farm, 2008

  5. PD 7309LC • Rickard, 2008 • Similar to NL Mad • Good quality • Good yield potential • Race 0 BS resistant • No Race 1 BS resistance • No Black root rot resistance PD 7309LC Danny Miller Farm, 2008

  6. PD 7318LC • Rickard, 2009 • Similar to NL Mad • Good quality • Good yield potential • Race 0 BS resistant • No Race 1 BS resistance • Black root rot resistant PD 7318LC Danny Miller Farm, 2008

  7. PH-gene Dark Varieties and Race 12 months after setting – Owensboro, KY 2008 PD 7309LC PD 7318LC PD 7302LC

  8. Up and Coming Dark Varieties • PD 7305 (Rickard): 2010 • High race 0 black shank resistance (10) like PD7302, 7309, and 7318, but with low-medium race 1 resistance similar to TN D950 (3) • D2602 (KT D10?): 2010 or 2011 • High race 0 resistance (10) with medium race 1 resistance similar to KT D4 (4) • PD 7319 (Rickard): 2011 • High race 0 resistance (10) with medium race 1 resistance

  9. Dark Tobacco Research Update 2009 Univ. of KY Agent Field Training June 19, 2009 – Scott Co. Extension Office Andy Bailey Univ. of KY / Univ. of TN Princeton, KY Graves County, KY 2008

  10. Current Dark Tobacco Research • Experimental pesticide screening trials: • Insecticides: • Coragen (rynaxypyr, DuPont) • Residual worm control • Foliar and setter water applications • Registration expected by 2010 • Rimon (novaluron, Chemtura) • Insect growth regulator, worm control • Brigadier (prepack mixture of Capture/Admire, FMC) • Worm and aphid control, foliar and setter water • Generic formulations of Admire (imidicloprid) • Alias 4F

  11. Current Dark Tobacco Research • Experimental pesticide screening trials: • Fungicides: • Revus (mandipropamid, Syngenta) • Blue mold control in burley • Herbicides: • Spartan Charge (Spartan + Aim, FMC) • Performance in strip-till tobacco • Spartan + Command prepackaged mixtures (1 jug) • Re-evaluation of old Command Pro product

  12. Current Dark Tobacco Research • Dark Fire-Curing: • Influence of microbial growth from dirt on harvested tobacco on TSNA development • Influence of wet tobacco at harvest on TSNA development • Alternative fire-curing methods and fuel sources
