Overarching Goal Significantlyincrease the percentage of students who are reading on grade level by third grade
Why Third Grade Reading? Research shows: • 75% of students who are poor readers in third grade will be poor readers in high school • High school graduation can be predicted with reasonable success by knowing third grade reading ability • It is a critical benchmark with predictive factors spanning from prenatal through early elementary & is of collective interest to diverse stakeholders and funders

Why Now? This effort builds upon the significant momentum of community leaders and educators working together for Fresno County children.

Current Reading Proficiency Status Percent of Fresno County Third Graders BELOW Proficient in English Language Arts: (CST 2012) • 57% of All Third Graders • 66% of “Economically Disadvantaged” • 84% of “English Language Learners”
The Challenge This challenge grant is a competitive opportunity for school districts demonstrating vision, interest, and capacity to utilize best practices, peer learning and technical assistance to support successful third grade reading beginning at birth.
