1. Pledge of Allegiance What is a flag? A flag is a piece of cloth, usually rectangular, of distinctive color and design, used as a symbol, standard, signal, or emblem. 2. Flag Etiquette Standards of Respect How to Fold the Flag When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously. The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source. The flag should be flown in fair weather, unless the flag is designed for inclement weather use. The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress. The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind. Two people hold the flag flat, about waist-high. The field should be in the left hand of one folder. The folders each bring their hands together, folding the flag in half lengthwise. They then hold the flag flat with the field down. They repeat the previous step, so the flag is now folded into quarters. The folded edge should be to the right side of the folder holding the field end. The folder opposite the field end now folds the end diagonally, forming a triangle. The fold is done from the folded edge to the open edge. The holder of the field end needs to hold tight, so the other person can make the diagonal folds tight. This process is repeated until the flag becomes a triangle. If the fold is done tightly, there will be a short tab remaining, which can be tucked into the end of the triangle. One of your duties as a safety patroller is to take care of the school’s American Flag every morning and afternoon.
