IN THIS ARTICLE, I AM GOING TO TELL YOU SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT GRAMMAR RULES. OF COURSE, THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO HAVE A WIDE KNOWLEDGE, BUT THESE ARE COMMON AREAS OF DIFFICULTY, AND SOFOCUSING ON THEM MAY BE VERYHELPFUL.
PRESENTPERFECT Thepresentperfectisusedforthingsthat began in the past and continue (or could continue)inthepresent.Ifthetimeperiod describedison-going,thenwewillusethe present perfecttense.
It is really important for formal writingthatyouareabletousethe passive voice. Whilst this is not reallycommonineverydayspoken English, we do use it for some situationsandwefrequentlyuseit inessays. THEPASSIVE VOICE The passive voice is formed with theverb“tobe”andthentheverb. It can be used to hide the person orthingthatdidanactionorwhen we simply do not know. It can change the focus of a sentence to showthattheagentofchangewas not particularlyimportant.
Manypeoplefindthatarticlesarethe hardestpartofEnglishgrammarand even English teachers find them difficult to explain. The fact is that therearemanyrulestoconsiderand often there are exceptions to these rules thatseem unintuitive. PREPOSITIONS Itisimportanttolearnlanguageingroups ofwordsratherthanmemorisinglists. Partofthereasonisthatyoucanpickup languagethroughcollocations,andthese oftenincludeprepositions.Whilstnoone reallyknowswhywesay“onthetrain” but “in the car,” we can certainly remember these withease.
