  2. All these words have an “a”. When “a” comes before r, they do not have a short sound. These vowels have a unique sound and are known as r-influenced (or r-controlled). War is an oddball because it is spelled with an –ar, but does not make the sound. Are can be an oddball since it has the same sound as -ar but it ends with the vowel “e”.
