VLPGO : Introduction • The Genesis • August 14, 2003 blackout in the eastern part of USA • Large scale disruptions and huge losses • Such disturbances are faced by all System Operators frequently • Underlying reliability issues need to be addressed. • The Beginning • Started as a group of organizations from various countries across the world, operating power grids of size more than 50,000 MW • A total of 13 organizations from 10 countries across the globe part of this initiative • POWERGRID, India: a founder member of this group • 2010: VLPGO incorporated in the USA as a non-profit organization • The Objective • Identifying the challenges and issues that are unique to the operation of very large power grids (50,000 MW +) • Sharing the experiences gained and the best practices adopted by various utilities • Development of a common vision in related technology areas • Development of a consensus on a prioritized list of issues, which are of common interest to the participating members • Development of joint action plans and initiatives

VLPGO: Structure & Information Exchange • Structure • Steering Committee – CEOs of all Member organizations • Meets once a year – In October • Governing Body – Designated Representatives from each organization • Meets twice a year • Working Groups on Subjects of Common Interest • One of the member countries takes the lead, responsible for development of the subject • Information collection through Questionnaires, Analysis & Collation of responses of members by Lead • Preparation and Presentation of report in the Annual Meeting • Teleconferences & Meetings, if necessary • Information Exchange • Through Emails only
