Getting physics education research published …sharing experiences… Manjula Sharma
Outline • Teaching development & PER • Publishing teaching development and PER • Journals our community has published in • This is my perspective, what are yours? • There is no magic recipe. We need to work on publishing though ….. together…
Draws on experiences and trends to design or redesign curricula, teaching environments. Surveys and observations to find out if the designs are working. Aware of rigid constraints Draws on literature, research findings +++ Framework for curricula Framework for study Systematic collection and analysis of data +++ Justification of methods and frameworks Appropriate jargon Informs literature Teaching development & PER
Publishing teaching development & PER • Continuum • We have invested time and effort, should we invest a bit more and get a publication? • Do we have something productive to share? • Audience and type of study -> choice of journal • Literature, research findings (similar studies) • Jargon -> form partnerships and alliances, could be temporary or long lasting. • PER papers -> frameworks and justifications
My perspective ……. • Long process, takes time and effort • Small chances of success • Feedback is largely constructive • Difficult to find appropriate journal • Alliances and mentors for writing • First few are torture • Learn to handle rejection and negative feedback
…. finally • Publications are necessary to establish PE &PER as a research community. • There are “big holes” eg maths transfer and use of multimedia/video in complex domain areas … • Important to share with others • Questions and comments
