UBER ACQUIRES AUTOCAB – IS THIS GOOD OR BAD FOR PRIVATE HIRE OPERATORS? Uber has last week acquired the Manchester based taxi booking & dispatch software provider Auto cab for an undisclosed sum, there have been mixed reactions from operators up and down the country and worldwide you use the Auto cab software. Kentax Taxis have been using Autocab to provide High Wycombe Taxis Service since the early 2000’s, they have some serious concerns about their data potentially being available to one of their biggest competitors. Data confidentiality and security is one of the biggest concerns facing businesses in today’s digital age. Abdul Hamid the Operations Director of Kentax Taxis says that Autocab is reassuring operators like us that our data is safe with Autocab, and no data sharing will take place with Uber, we are sceptical at this stage but have been in a very positive business relationship
with Autocab for the best part of 2 decades now which is persuading us to believe them at this stage, only time will tell if our trust was justified and validated. Autocab’s Marketing Director Jon Smith who will be staying on as part of the Management team after the take-over said that data sharing will not happen, he added that it would be illegal for Autocab to share their data with Uber under the data protection laws, he added that we can only use data as instructed by our customers, and they already handle data for competitor companies in some cities without sharing their data and they have no intention of doing this with Uber. Jon Smith insists that this acquisition will open new opportunities for operators like Kentax giving them access to jobs in towns and cities where Uber does not currently operate, he said operators like Kentax will continue to experience the same and most likely increased business growth as the core Management Team at Autocab of Safa Alkateb, Hasan Abod and himself will be staying on and Autocab will continue to operate as a stand-alone business with its own board.
Autocab operates in 33 countries around the world and currently has a strong user base of 75,000 cars in the UK, according to Uber there is a huge amount of interest in Uber services within the towns and cities it does not currently operate in, which is very positive for all the operators like Kentax who can potentially benefit from these extra bookings, going by data supplied by Uber more than 67,000 people opened the Uber App on their devices in Oxford last year, which is one of the biggest markets Uber does not currently operate in the South East of England. Jon Smith added that even in towns and cities where Uber does currently operate there will be significant opportunities for operators like Kentax Taxis In High Wycombe to generate more business via the Uber Business Pre-Bookings or Food Deliveries from Uber Eats. According to Smith, there would be an opt-out screen on the Autocab system which would allow any Autocab customer to opt-out of taking any Uber jobs, he said Uber wants to work with the private hire sector rather than against it.” Smith highlighted the fact that Uber has not launched into any new towns or cities since 2016. Uber currently operates in around 40 UK towns, but the link-up with Autocab will give it a presence in 170 more, this will allow any Autocab customer to pick up work booked by individuals using any other Autocab customer’s app.
Abdul says that we are extremely shocked at the takeover, we have great security concerns over the sharing of our data with Uber but are exerting faith in the assurances provided by our long term business solution provider Autocab that they will not share our data and the promises they have made that this acquisition will increase revenue and earning potential for our Taxi High Wycombe drivers. The very near future will determine if this was a good move or bad move for independent operators like Kentax Taxis but for now, operators like Mr Hamid are taking all the re- assurances from Autocab in good faith and are looking forward to a new era in the private hire industry in the UK.
