Snow

Here is some snow falling during the day.

Here is some snow falling at dusk.

Here is some snow falling at night.

Snow covers the trees.

The snow can cover little branches. It can be very pretty!

Lots of snow can be heavy. It can make trees bend down.

But when the snow is light, and the wind blows, it can build up in snow drifts—like sand dunes.

In some places in the north, the snow gets very, very deep!

When snow covers the driveway and sidewalk, we should shovel it away.

When snow covers the roads, snow plows have to push it off the road.

Snow is cold! The cold makes our nose and cheeks red.

Snow happens especially during winter. That means December, January, and February.

Many birds fly south for winter, to avoid the cold and the snow,

but some birds can live around the snow,

even chickens like this rooster!

People ski down hills on snow. This man is downhill skiing.

But be careful skiing down hill. Watch out for cliffs!

You can also ski across the snow, even where it is flat. These people are cross-country skiing.

In very cold places, with few roads, dogs pull sleds with people and their things!

Remember the story of Balto? He was the lead dog in a dogsled team.

Snow is cold, but it can be fun. Kids like to have snowball fights,

and go sledding,

and of course to build snowmen!
