Definitions….. Risk: a probability or threat of damage, injury, or other negative occurrence Risk Perception: subjective judgment about the severity and/or probability of a risk
Risk = Toxicity x Exposure • Toxicity • Inherent to chemical structure • Non-zero, but uncertain • Exposure • Can vary widely • May be controllable
Things to Ponder • Who? emotional or objective • How many? individual vs. population • What type? voluntary or involuntary • How certain? confidence vs. conjecture
