INTRODUCTION “Coraline”, by Neil Gaiman, is an exciting book about a very interesting character called Coraline. The story follows Coraline as she moves into a new house, called ‘The Pink Palace’, where she meets a variety of fascinating characters during her adventures. She is very curious about a bricked-up door, and when she bravely explores this, she discovers another world where she meets her Other Mother. The Other Mother, however, is actually evil and wants to keep Coraline there forever. To escape, Coraline challenges her in a clever game and eventually, rescuing her real parents, Coraline finally defeats the Other Mother. Coraline is curious, independent, clever and brave which makes her a very interesting character to read.

SUMMARY • A memory of Galloway’s childhood • Fearless, a local character who created terror amongst the woman and children • He verbally attacked random women • Men thought of him as a joke or a legend. • As a child, Galloway was so angry she kicked out at him • She still sees the division of men and women today and it still angers her
Conclusion • The concluding paragraph should: • Link back to your original points made in the introduction - TARTS • Sum up what you have said overall. • Have a personal comment on the book
WHAT IS THE MAIN BODY? MAIN BODY PARAGRAPHS ARE WHERE YOU DISCUSS THE MAIN POINTS OF YOUR ANSWER.
THEME • Women’s response • Men’s response • Women’s role • Men’s role • Current situation • Character • Aggressive • Tramp/appearance • Legend/myth • Women’s reaction • Men’s reaction
Galloway suggests that her society has been conditioned by Fearless’ aggressive behaviour. She remembered how “he would storm up and down the main street, threatening…” The description of Fearless includes the modal verb “would” which suggests that this activity was a regular occurrence, while the use of the metaphor, “stormed” gives us a clear picture of how darkly angry this man was. Finally, by including ‘threatening’ Galloway evinces the image of a very aggressive character who poses a risk to the women and children of her local area. Through this and similar such quotes, Galloway depicts Fearless as a violent and confrontational man and a memorable character.
