The Project • Summary: RES and RUE stimulation of mountainous – agricultural local communities of the European Union (EU), in a way that will ensure both the integrated and balanced evolution in the most common dimensions (economical – employment, environmental, social and technological) of the Sustainable Development (SD); • Carried out: Under the Intelligent Energy for Europe Programme, managed by the Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation; • Started: 1/12/2007; • Expected Completion Date: 30/11/2009; • Coordinator: EPU-NTUA; • Number of Partners: 9.
The Objectives • Identification of specific RES and RUE needs and determination of opportunities; • Preparation of viable and socially matured RES and RUE project opportunities; • Formulation of the first European “sustainable energy network in mountainous - agricultural communities”; • Enhancement of the involved actors’ communication bridges, through the development of permanent local communication networks. Prototype “sustainable mountainous - agricultural communities”

Target Groups • Policy Makers: EU, governmental institutions, local authorities, municipalities, chambers of agriculture, chambers of commerce. • Energy Market: Investors, energy production and energy service companies (ESCOs), major industry & business associations in the commercial and industrial sector, owners of (biomass) district heating, farmers, forest companies, installers, construction, fuel trade, educational and research organizations and institutions of the implementation communities. • Energy Citizenship: Citizens, Associations, Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
Direct Outcomes • Overview of the RES and RUE implemented technologies in the 4 mountainous - agricultural EU communities; • “Mapping” document with the current status, needs and prospects of the RES and RUE stimulation in the implementation communities; • Upgraded guide for mountainous - agricultural communities for RES and RUE stimulation; • Viable and socially matured RES and RUE project opportunities’ identification; • Set up of an “Early Warning System”; • Sustainable Design for a network in the mountainous - agricultural communities in EU; • Building of a scientific and political consensus on the project results, through workshops; • Diffuse the idea and modus operandi of the mountainous – agricultural communities’ network; • Dissemination material of the elaborated results (leaflets, newsletters, posters).
Potential Impacts • Economy – Employment: • Creation of new business opportunities in the local market; • Enforcement of the local agricultural income; • Increase of agricultural tourism and ecotourism; • Environmental: • Contribution to the national Kyoto Protocol goals; • Minimization of acid rain, soil and water pollution, ozone depletion etc; • Social: • Enhancement of the local’s energy culture; • Technological: • Know how transfer to local manufacturers; • Promotion of best practice solutions and BAT.
