FIRST AID KIT • Contents of a First Aid Kit • *Should contain some combination of the items listed below • Antiseptic Wipes • Assorted Antibacterial Ointment • Assorted Adhesive Bandages • Gauze Pads (Rolled and Square) • Medical Adhesive Tape • Splints • Antihistamine (Allergic Reactions) • Assorted Bandages • Ice Packs • Scissors and Gloves • *Can contain other items, not limited to above
Antiseptic Wipes • What are antiseptic wipes? • Two Types • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic • (The alcohol is used as a disinfectant ) • Wipes that can be used to clean or disinfect… • Minor cuts • Wounds • Abrasions
Antiseptic Ointment • What is antiseptic ointment? • Antiseptic ointment is used to treat or heal different types of cuts, scraps or burns
Adhesive Bandages There are many different types of adhesive bandages. Bandages come in all different shapes and sizes and can be used for different types of: Cuts Wounds Burns
Gauze Pads Rolled Gauze Square Gauze Used for covering burns and large scraps. Used for blotting wounds and covering wounds that adhesive bandages can’t.
Medical Adhesive Tape • Tape can be used in many different ways: • To secure gauze pads • To tape broke fingers together
Splints • Splints are used to support a broken or fracture extremity (arm or leg) • Splints can be made out of different types of material: • Wood • Plastic • Metal • Any rigid material can be used • Supported and attached with rolled gauze or triangle bandages
Antihistamines • Antihistamine is a drug that is used to fight an allergic reaction • Types of Antihistamines: • Pills • Creams • Shots
Assorted Bandages • Bandages are used to make slings and support splints • Types of bandages: • Triangle bandages – used to make slings and splint support • Elastic bandages (ACE bandages) –used for supporting sprained joints and other injuries
Ice Packs • Ice Packs are used to sooth bruises and burns • They are usually instant cooling • Squeeze to make cold • Many are good for one time use only • Dispose after use
Scissors and Gloves • Scissors are used to • Cut bandages • Cut gauze • Cut clothes if needed • Cut off tape or bandages • Gloves are also important for protection while giving first aid
How to Make a Sling • Slings are used for • Elevating broken bones • Keeping injured shoulders in place • Steps to make a sling: • Use a triangle bandage • Slip one end under the arm and the other over the shouler • Take loose end and wrap around arm and over the other shulder • Tie ends together • How to Make a Sling
