Aim To test the hypothesis that genetic factors lessen the susceptibility to environmentally intervening factors associated with rearing family functioning.
Procedure Finnish adoption study. Identified adopted-away offspring of biological mothers who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and a matched control group of 135 adopted- away offspring of mothers who had not be diagnosed with any mental disorders.
Findings Adopted group 1: Biological mothers had schizophrenia. Adopted group 2: No family history of schizophrenia. • 7% of group 1 developed schizophrenia by adulthood. • 1.5% of group 2 developed schizophrenia by adulthood.
Conclusion Children born to schizophrenic mothers and later adopted were more likely to develop schizophrenia.
Evaluation • This provides good evidence for the diathesis-stress model. The individual may have a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia which is triggered by the environment (the adoptive family). • If it is solely down to the genetic basis, we would expect over 7% of children whose biological mothers had schizophrenia to develop schizophrenia.
