Overview of the HRSA Grant • Interdisciplinary, Community-Based, Health Education for Diverse Elders. • Sponsored by Health Resources and Services Administration, HHS. • 3-year grant to Long Island University. • Project Director: Prof. Rebecca StatesProject Co-Director: Assoc. Dean William Susman

Three Parts to Grant • Community Education Modules:Presented at local Senior Centers, Presented in English and in Spanish. • Multimedia Case Study Modules:New, web-based, case studies of elders for use in health care curricula at LIU and elsewhere. • Dissemination of Grant Products:Website for other Health Education ProgramsWebsite for Elderly Health Information ConsumersContinuing Studies Course for Health Professionals

According to the established plans of the grant students will be participating We have determined that students within the health science disciplines (PT, OT, Speech, Nursing, Respiratory Care) as well as social work students would be appropriate’ Students must have completed at least one clinical practice experience Student Involvement

Student Involvement • Student will be provided a preparatory session that will • Introduce the grant and the CEM’s • Inform the student about the Senior Center where module will be presented • Inform the student about the content of a given CEM • Describe their specific role in the CEM session

  11. Student Involvement • Students will attend all four CEM’s at one Senior Center • On 1st and last days conduct interviews with seniors on their knowledge and attitudes toward the topic • On all 4 days will assist with presentations, work in small groups, participate in CEM activities

  12. Student Involvement • We envision 6-12 students participating in each CEM • CEM format will be established with student participation in mind • The Dementia and Depression sessions have interactive components built in • Students will be involved in CEM’s presented in Spanish

  13. Student Involvement • Students will participate in a follow-up discussion among all student participants on campus • How helpful was the experience for the elders? • What did they learn about multidisciplinary work? • What did they learn about community education?

  14. Student Involvement • Each academic program involved can create their own means of incorporating this experience into their curricula. • Pre and Post module questionnaires given to the students may be used to evaluate their attitudes and knowledge of older adults

  15. Presentation of the Module • The module was developed as a PowerPoint presentation as this was a workable medium for the faculty involved. • Text was kept to a minimum with a basic level of language to enhance understanding • Photo’s and clip art added to keep it fun!
