4. High School Info. Semester • First Semester: August to December • Second Semester: January to May • Courses are either semester or year long. Credit Hour • 1 credit is earned per semester per class. • If the course is a semester, it is worth 1 credit. • If the course is year long, it is worth 2 credits. • To earn a credit, you must have a passing grade (D- or above)

5. Block Scheduling • Classes meet every other day • Red days • White days • You will have a study hall every other day. • You will have a 30 minute Star Period daily.

6. Grade Point Average Grades are calculated on a 4.0 scale. Pink Schedules • DUE: Friday, March 2, 2012 • Early College Schedule forms versusRegular schedule forms • White label • Early College (Which means you have been accepted into EC) • Honors Classes (Which are recommendations from the HS) • Foreign Language (Which means you are eligible to take FL) • Algebra Enrichment (Which means you are required to take this class as one of your electives)

Early College • Have you been accepted? • To be accepted into EC, you would have completed an online application and received an acceptance letter from the HS. • Postcards were included with the acceptance letters. You need to return the postcard to the HS letting them know whether or not you accept their invitation into EC. • If you are accepting the invitation into EC, you will complete the EC pink schedule.

9. Early College • What if I applied to EC, received an acceptance letter, and want to decline the invitation? • Return the postcard to the HS, letting them know that you have declined the invitation. • Request a regular pink scheduling form from your counselor, complete the regular form, and staple it to the EC pink scheduling form.

Early College • What if I want to be in EC and in honors? • You can be in EC and Honors Algebra I and/or Honors Biology • You cannot be in EC and Honors Geography and/or Honors English 9 • You must be recommended for honors classes to take them at the HS or your parent must go through the appeal process (later slide)

11. Early College • What if I want to take Early College but didn’t apply or didn’t get accepted for next year? • You can apply every year. Your next opportunity to apply will be next year.

12. Early College • How will my schedule be different? • All EC freshman are required to take Computer Applications for dual credit through Vincennes University. • Study hall and Computer Applications are combined for EC students.

Diploma Tracks CORE 40 • Basic diploma needed to progress into college • Foreign language is not necessarily required for Core 40, but it is recommended for entrance into college • Minimum Requirements – 4 Years of Math, 3 Years of Science, 3 Years of Social Studies, 4 Years of English, 1 Year of PE, 1 Semester of Health • Electives: You will be encouraged to take electives that are focused towards your career goal. • Must pass ECA for Algebra I and English 10 • 46 Credits

15. Diploma Tracks ACADEMIC HONORS • Meet all Core 40 requirements • Minimum Foreign Language Requirement- 3 years of one language or two years of two different languages • Minimum Fine Arts Requirement- two credits of art and/or music • You must meet one of the following: • Complete a minimum of two advanced placement classes and take the AP exams • 6 college credits earned through dual high school/college courses • Meet minimum SAT scores • Meet minimum ACT scores • Receive 4 credits in IB courses and take the IB exams • You must earn a C or above in all courses • You must have a GPA of a 3.0 (B Average)

Diploma Tracks TECHNICAL HONORS • Meet Core 40 requirements • You must earn a C or above in all courses • You must have a GPA of a 3.0 • You must earn a minimum of 6 credits in a state-approved College & Career pathway • Complete one of the following: • Any of the options (A-F) of the Core 40 with Academic Honors • Earn a minimum score on Work Keys • Earn a minimum score on Accuplacer • Earn a minimum score on Compass

18. Honors • The high school may recommend you to take one or more honors classes. Look at the white label on your schedule. Any honors classes you are allowed to take are listed on the label. • ****If you received a letter from the high school about honors recommendations, keep this letter to turn in with your high school schedule****

Honors appeal process: • If you would like to take an honors class and are not recommended, you must circle the non-honors class. • Have your parents write a letter addressed to Mr. Matt Shockley defending your abilities to be successful in the honors level class. • Staple the letter to your pink schedule. • Mr. Shockley will notify your parents in writing whether or not the request has been granted.

22. Electives • Electives are classes that YOU get to choose. • Be a good consumer! • Read the Academic Course Guide and pick classes that sound interesting to you. • You will be selecting 4 credit hours of electives for your freshman year.

23. Algebra I Enrichment • If this class is listed on your label, it is required. • It is a year long course that supports Algebra I. • It does count for two math credits. • It does occupy 2 of the 4 credits for electives.

Foreign Languages Options are: • Spanish I • Spanish II • French I • French II To be eligible you must have a B- or above first semester for both math and language. • How do you know if you are eligible? • Does your label say “Foreign Language” • YES? Then you are eligible to take foreign language at CGHS • No? Then you cannot take foreign language your freshman year

32. Foreign Language Appeal What if you want to take foreign language your freshman year but you were not recommended by the high school? • Your parents can appeal by writing a letter to Mr. Shockley and attaching it to the pink form.

33. Spanish II & French II Am I ready to move on to the second year of my foreign language? • If you are in foreign language right now and take the second year as a freshman, your first semester and second semester grades for Spanish I or French I will go onto your HS transcript. • The second year of a foreign language is tougher. If you have a B- or lower for the first semester, you should discuss your options with your foreign language teacher or Mrs. Paul/Mrs. Stremming.

34. Introduction to Engineering Design Project Lead the Way (pg. 30) • Pre-Engineering Class (first class of a series-leading to a Career Major in Engineering) • It is an elective and is weighted (this class could affect overall class rank) • To take the class, the student must have an “A” or “B” in 8th grade math and have an interest in the field of math.

Online Scheduling • What if you are appealing for Honors or Foreign Language? • You must select regular classes unless recommendations are listed on your label. • The HS will change the regular classes to honors classes if 1) you turned in an appeal letter and 2) if Mr. Shockley approves the honors class. • The HS will add foreign language if 1) you turned in an appeal letter and 2) if Mr. Shockley approves the honors class
