Life Safety Code Enforcement EHS personnel inspect all campus locations on a routine and special basis to ensure the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. If any unsafe conditions are found, the Authority Having Jurisdiction has the authority to stop the work and/or lock out the area until improvements are made. Oklahoma State University
Construction Code Enforcement All construction, renovation and remodeling of any structure owned or operated by OSU shall be designed and constructed according to all codes/standards that are referenced by the 2003 International Building Code. During construction, all projects will be inspected at regular intervals for safe working practices, good construction and adherence to applicable codes. If serious violations are found, a Cease & Desist Order may be issued. Oklahoma State University

Federal Compliance Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) • Clean Air • Clean Water • Hazardous & Infectious Waste Disposal • Pollution Control • Storm Water Discharge EPA has transferred this authority to the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) for enforcement. Federal Compliance Occupational Safety & Health Admin. (OSHA) • Asbestos / Lead Abatement • Bloodborne Pathogens • Hazard Communications • Personal Protective Equipment • Chemical Hygiene Plan (Laboratory Safety) • Worker Safety The Oklahoma Department of Labor (DOL) enforces the federal OSHA rules. Oklahoma State University
Federal Compliance Department of Transportation Regulates interstate shipment and permitting of all chemical and hazardous substances. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission establishes rules and regulations for intrastate shipment under Senate Bill 809, of the 2000 Legislature. University Mailing Services coordinates the shipment of biological and hazardous substances to and from the OSU campus with EHS and other University departments. Oklahoma State University
Federal Compliance Emergency Management (FEMA) Stafford Act Emergency Operations Plan Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Developed the Master Emergency Plan for OSU. Americans With Disabilities The ADA is adjudicated by the U.S. Department of Justice. EHS assists the University with ADA compliance by: • Reviewing all construction and renovation plans • Investigating ADA complaints Oklahoma State University
State Compliance State-mandated training requirements • Quarterly Safety Training • Bloodborne Pathogen Training • Hazard Communication Training • Respirator Training These training requirements are part of federally-mandated safety programs administered by the State Department of Labor. EHS’ safety training coordinator provides the required training or assistance for the OSU system and the A&M institutions. Oklahoma State University

What Training is Required? • Anyone who is employed by OSU is required to receive Quarterly Safety Training as well as Hazard Communication (Right-to-Know) Training. (HB 1447, 1993) • Other training may be required depending on the job duties of the employee. Oklahoma State University

Asbestos Abatement John Dodson, Coordinator • All abatement work on the OSU campus is conducted according to the regulations of the Oklahoma Department of Labor. • All Asbestos workers must be licensed by the State of Oklahoma and receive annual training. Oklahoma State University

EHS Campus Safety Projects HES Child Development Playground Raised surrounding fence to height of 6 feet to provide the children with added safety and security. Oklahoma State University
EHS Campus Safety Projects Blue Emergency Phones Purchased 30 “Blue Phones”for the Campus Emergency Phone Project. Oklahoma State University
EHS Campus Safety Projects Elevator Emergency Phones Purchased and installed emergency “hands-free” phones for all elevators in academic campus buildings. Oklahoma State University
EHS Campus Safety Projects Storm Sirens Installed three new storm sirens on campus. We are planning to purchase at least two additional sirens to cover new student housing areas. Oklahoma State University
EHS Campus Safety Projects Campus Sidewalk Improvements Funded work to remove tripping hazards in campus sidewalks and build new sidewalks at a cost of more than $160,000 over the past 5 years. Oklahoma State University
EHS Campus Safety Projects Jewelry Lab Provided funding for construction of the new Jewelry Lab on the 4th floor of the Bartlett Center. Oklahoma State University
EHS Campus Safety Projects Laboratory Equipment Purchased and installed equipment and materials as necessary to help bring existing chemical laboratories into compliance with current code. Oklahoma State University
EHS Campus Safety Projects CEAT Design & Manufacturing Lab Provided funds to install surplus parking lot lights, plus purchase and install a Blue Emergency phone at this remote parking lot on the northwest side of campus. Oklahoma State University
