  2. Where in the world? • Easter island is located • Off the coast of Chile in • South America. • It is about 2000 miles off • the coast Chile, making it • one of the most isolated places in the world.

  3. About the society • Discovered by Europeans in 1722 • It was an isolated population with only about 2,000 inhabitants in 300 – 1200 C.E. • No major historical impact • In depth religion based around Birds. • One monarch who ruled permanently, family inherits power.

  4. Society Cont. • People are divided into clans. • Clans often fight, but outcome has no impact on who rules the island. • Trade fish and fish related products when not fighting.

  5. Economy • Labor is forbidden to women • Tools are sacred, fishing hooks made of bone. • Main source of trade is fishing • Clans trade tools when not fighting • Used basic coins to pay for items • People do not elevate in social status because of economic success • Economy is different after peak as people began to die.
