  2. Program Contents—Very Intensive • You will take 3 Japanese classes for a total of 9 credit hours in 6 weeks. All applicable to major/minor/certificate. • JAPN 3691: Technical & Scientific Japanese • Instructors: Kimiaki Yamaguchi and Tokyo Tech faculty • JAPN 3692: Business Japanese • Instructors: Dr. Kikuchi & Kimiaki Yamaguchi • JAPN 3693: Japan Today • Instructor: Kimiaki Yamaguchi • You will have three classes daily, Monday through Friday except on field trip days.

  3. Program Contents—Very Fun • Weekend trip to Nagasaki, weekend ‘farm’-stay, school and factory visits, Beppu hot spring tour, etc. • You will have opportunities to do cultural activities such as tea ceremony and calligraphy, and have intercultural communication experience with host campus students. • We will also have laboratory visits (e.g. robotics lab) at our host university.

  4. Program Requirements • You must have taken at least JAPN2002 or equivalent with at least a B in Chapter 2 Test, have good attendance record, and be in good academic standing. (If you are in JAPN 3001/3002, you need to maintain a B average.) • You need to self-study as much content of JAPN 3001 and 3002 as possible if you have only completed JAPN 2002 (or JAPN3001) by the end of Spring 2008. • If you are currently taking JAPN 2001 or 2002, consult Kimiaki Yamaguchi for further information. • Maximum number of participants: 20

  5. Cost • Application Fee: $150 (non-refundable) • Program Fee: $4,450 • Summer Session Tuitions & Fees (See Bursar’s Office Website for the rates) • The program fee includes accommodation,, textbooks, full coverage and repatriation insurance, and ground transportation for program-sponsored mandatory activities. It does not include air fares (international flights to/from Japan and domestic flights in the U.S. and Japan), meals (est. $800~900). Small meal subsidy will be provided to as long as you follow the rules such as curfews.

  6. Scholarships • STARS Assistantship (Ask at OIE) ($500) • Campoamor: Between $400-500 depending on the # of applicants (Download application & recommendation forms at http://www.modlangs.gatech.edu/student_resources/scholarships/ and submit them to Dr. Britta Kallin.) • Hope Scholarships applies. (If you are planning to use Hope Scholarships to pay for the LBAT program, you need to let us know so that your payment can be deferred until the scholarship money becomes available.

  7. Local Rules • Curfew (11:00p.m.) You will be participating in a very intensive language program. You should be spending a lot of time studying, not drinking, playing video games, etc. Furthermore, places we will be staying at are facilities for students and trainees. Therefore, you must observe our curfew. If you break this rule, you lose your meal subsidy and will be reported to Dean of Students. If you break this rule twice, you will be asked to withdraw from LBAT (and return to Atlanta). • Alcohol The legal drinking age in Japan is 20. If you get a hang over or cannot show up in time for classes and field trips, due to late night drinking, we consider that you are not interested in participating in LBAT any more. We will report it to Dean of Students as well.

  8. More Local Rules • Bath & Shower time In the dormitory of APU (Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University) the hours you can take a bath (or shower) is limited. • Others (Common sense courtesy rules) When you go to Japan on the LBAT program, keep in mind that you are representing Georgia Tech. Our school will be judged on the basis of your behavior. Behave well. Do not touch a fire alarm or a fire extinguisher unless in an emergency. Do not make loud noises in public places. Being considerate to others is very important in Japan.

  9. We will meet in front of the bus information desk inside International Arrival Lobby at Fukuoka airport at 9:10p.m. on Wed., May 7. Since will take the last bus to Beppu, make sure to arrive at our rendezvous point on time. If you are not there (for whatever reason), we will leave there without you. If you are flying to Fukuoka from Narita (New Tokyo International) airport, the last flight you can take to catch this last bus (to Beppu) is ANA (All Nippon Airways) 2143 leaving Narita at 5:45p.m. (Please note that the airline schedule may change.) • You are responsible for obtaining your own plane tickets. When you book and purchase Japanese domestic flights, you can get substantial discounts, using Visit Japan program. To take advantage of this program, you must send your proof of residence (copy of your driver’s license) and the ticket number of your international flight your travel agent.

  10. When we move from Beppu to Tokyo, we will be traveling together on the same flight. Make sure book and purchase a ticket on our designated flight. We are currently planning to take the 12:05 flight (JAL 1786) from Oita airport to Haneda (Tokyo) airport. (Again the airline schedule is subject to change.) We will let you know the exact flight number by the end of Feb., 2008. • If you are planning to travel in Japan, using JR pass, after the LBAT program, you must purchase it before you leave the U.S. Ask your travel agent.

  11. Accommodations • Beppu (May 7-June 3) • Except the last few days, you will live in a single room in one of the APU dormitories. • During the last few days, you will move to a different dorm and have to share the room with one or a few participants. • Tokyo (June 3-June 18) • You will be staying at AOTS (Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship) Tokyo Training Center located in the northeastern part of Tokyo. You will be staying in a single room during the entire stay in Tokyo. • You need to commute (about 1 hour if you walk like Japanese commuters) by subway/train to commute to Tokyo Tech. • Prepaid bus/train cards will be provided to cover the train fares for commuting.

  12. Required Orientations (Check our FAQ site for updates) • If you are accepted into the program, you must attend mandatory OIE meetings (Part I and Part II) For the dates, time, and place of these meetings, check http://www.oie.gatech.edu/events/ • In addition to these two meetings, we will be holding two orientation meetings for LBAT Japan. Your attendance in these meetings is mandatory.
