Understand the Food Pyramid • The old food guide pyramid was changed to MyPyramid so it can adjust to be more personal and also adds emphasis on the importance of fitness in maintaining a healthy lifestyle
Kids thoughts about the new MyPyramid • Some kids like the pictures on the old Food Pyramid better, while others like the added color on MyPyramid. • Some say they enjoy the added stairs and jogger, it’s as if it is saying "Stay healthy and be on top of the world!" http://kidshealth.org/kid/stay_healthy/food/comments_new_pyramid.html
Moderation in All Things • It’s important for us all to remember to keep a balance between food intake and physical activity. • Choose nutritious foods and snacks for kids especially as they are growing and need more nutrients. • Eat a variety of color, each day and more foods from certain colors such as orange (grains), green (vegetables) and blue (milk, dairy).
Fun Healthy Snacks • Let children help you make fun snacks that are secretly healthy . • Ex. “Ants on a Log” –Celery with peanut butter and raisins
Try something new!! “Goldfish in the Pond” • Rice Cakes with blue dyed cream cheese (or cottage cheese) and goldfish. http://kidscooking.about.com/od/snacksdipsappetizers/tp/healthy_snacks_for_kids.htm
Let them create their own • Plain Vanilla Yogurt, granola, fresh fruit. • Simple, quick, healthy and pretty! Yogurt Parfait
A dose of fruits and veggies… • Apple slices with peanut butter and granola • OR • Veggie sticks and crackers with hummus dip • *Tip cut the veggies into fun shapes and slices to make them look more appealing!
Exciting Ideas for lunch • Pizza Smiley Fun! • What You Need: • English muffins • Tomato Paste • Shredded Cheese • Olive Oil • Fresh Veggies • S&P, Garlic and Oregano Seasonings
