Telling Time in Spanish:¿Qué hora es?= What time is it? I.When it is exacly on the hour, like 9:00, 4:00, 3:00 you simply say: "Son las ____," with the Spanish words for the #. Example: 3 o‘clock= Son las _____. 8 o‘clock= Son las _____. 11 o‘clock= Son las _____. tres ocho once
II. To say that it is quarter after (15 min. past the hour), you say “Son las ___ y cuarto.” Ex.: 6:15= Son las _____y cuarto. 2:15= Son las _____y cuarto. 12:15= Son las _____y cuarto. seis dos doce
III. To say that it is a half hour after the hour, or “____ thirty” (2:30, 5:30) you say “Son las ____ y media.” Ex.: 2:30= Son las _____y media. 4:30= Son las _____y media. V. When talking about 1:00 (between 12:31 – 1:29) esis used instead of son. This is b/c you are talking about 1 single hour (la hora). Ex.: 1:00= Es la una. 1:10= Es la una y diez. 1:15= Es la una y cuarto. 1:25= Es la una y veinticinco. 1:30= Es la una y media. 1:45 = Son las 2 menoscuarto. 12: 45 = Es la unamenoscuarto.
Now…what about 12:35? – Past the 30 min. mark, must use “menos”, but now you are subtracting from 1 which uses “ es la “ … So.... 12:35= Es la unamenosveinticinco. 12:45= Es la unamenoscuarto. 1:35= Son las dos menosveinticinco. 1:50 = Son las dos menosdiez.

In most of the Spanish-speaking world, both 12-hour and 24-hour clocks are used, the latter being common in schedules and similar printed materials. • To indicate time of day when using the 12-hour clock, use • de la mañana before noon(mediodía), • de la tarde between noon and early evening, • de la noche between then and midnight (medianoche). • Es medianoche. It's midnight.
