The Joy of Reading Bronwen Loveday Cherrybrook Public School 2012
NYR 2012 The National Year of Reading 2012 is about children learning to read and keen readers finding new sources of inspiration. It's about supporting reading initiatives while respecting the oral tradition of storytelling. It's about helping people discover and rediscover the magic of books. And most of all, it's about Australians becoming a nation of readers.
We will be supporting NYR at Cherrybrook in 2012… • Student participation in the Premier’s Reading Challenge • Promoting new books, new authors and new series • Library displays designed to promote reading • Promoting the library as a place to visit – open most mornings and most lunchtimes (2nd half) • Optional participation in the Super Reading Challenge (Yrs 3-6) • Book Week events / Scholastic Book Fair • Library Awards for good borrowing etc…
Why Read Literature…. “Reading takes our children into places where their imaginations can soar, where they can problem-solve, empathize and gain insight into other times, places and cultures.” (Susan Hughes, Canadian Living) “Children can enter into the minds of different characters and experience their points of view and motives, and the consequences that might result from their actions. “ (Barb Kissick, Canadian Living)
Inspiring our Children to Love Books • Never too early or too late to learn to appreciate books • Best way to help children grow up with a love of books and reading is to set an example • Many experts encourage parents to read to their babies while they are still in the womb • Continue reading once the baby is born – it will foster a love of books plus assist in development – language, emotional, social etc....
