Definition • A Fiber Glass is a covering material made of glass fibers in resins. • A Fiber Glass is a composite material widely used in the automotive industry. • Glass-reinforced plastic also known as glass fiber-reinforced plastic is a fiber reinforced polymer made of a plastic matrix reinforced by fine fibers made of glass. It is also known as GFK (for Glasfaserverstärkter Kunststoff), or simply by the name of the reinforcing fibers themselves: fiberglass. • The plastic matrix may be epoxy, a thermosetting plastic or thermoplastic.
Examples • Kit cars are often made from Fiber Glass as are many sports cars including the Chevrolet Corvette. • Windshields of cars. • Industries. • Windows.
Cautious • Working with Fiberglass is an unpleasant business due to the fumes from the resin and itchiness of the Fiber Glass. • When we are working with Fiber Glass we need to wear gloves for protection. • To reduce the itching of Fiber Glass try not to scratch . If affected we need to wash the affected areas with cold water.
Materials that is made of • Gel coats are the shiny face of Fiber Glass. • Gel coats are what you see on most Fiber Glass vehicles that are not painted or boat hulls. • Gel coats consist of a thick gel-like resin mixed with a colored pigment, it is the first thing laid into a mold and therefore when the mold is removed it becomes the exterior.
Uses • Boats • Automobiles • Water Tanks • Roofing • Pipes and Cladding.
