  1. Layer Farming

  2. Layer Farming (Egg Farming) • Eggs are produced for commercial purposes by layer farming. • Layer farming involves raising egg laying poultry birds for commercial egg production. • There are several types of layer breeds boasting a high rate of production of eggs available throughout the world.

  3. Layer Breeds • Layer chickens are a distinct species of hens. • They are raised when they are as little as one day old. • They can start laying eggs from as early as 18-19 weeks of age. • This egg-laying period can continue till they reach 72-78 weeks of age. • They can produce up to one kg of eggs by consuming around 2.25 kg of feed during their egg-laying period.

  4. Classification Of Layer Breeds • Hens are classified into two types depending upon the nature and colour of egg in layer farming. • White egg-laying hens and brown egg-laying hens are two main categories of layer breeds in layer farming.

  5. White Egg-Laying Hens • White egg-laying hens are comparatively smaller in size and require relatively less food. • As the name suggests, the colour of their eggshell is white. • Havard White, Isa White, Lehman White, Nikchik, Bab Cock BV-300, Sever White, and Bovanch White are some well-known white egg-laying chickens available for layer farming.

  6. Brown Egg-Laying Hens • They are bigger and eat more food in comparison to the white egg layer hens. • Their eggshell is brown. Brown egg-laying birds lay relatively big eggs. • Many types of brown egg layer hens are available for layer farming. • Bab Cock BV-380, Isa Brown, Hi Sex Brown, Sever 579, Bablona Tetro, BablonaHarko, Lehman Brown, Gold Line, etc. are the most suitable brown egg-laying hens for commercial layer farming.

  7. Selection Of Layer Hens • It is essential to consider certain factors while selecting the layer hens for layer farming. • Identifying suitable breeds for the layer farming business is vital. • Two main things should be kept in mind while selecting layer hens for eggs.

  8. Health Of Chicks • Purchasing healthy chicks from a well-established hatchery is crucial. • A walk through the hatchery’s catalogue can help to gain the required information about their competencies.

  9. Maintaining Chicks for Layer Farming • It is natural for many chicks to not drink the water due to exhaustion from traveling from one place to another. • It is not uncommon during the first weeks after birth. • Training must be given to them to drink water. • Adequate water should be made available in the brooder house.

  10. Vaccination For Layer Farming • Vaccination is critical for chicks to prevent them from diseases. • Timely vaccination enables disease resistance in chicks and keeps the poultry animal free from poultry infections. • Thus, vaccination reduces mortality leading to increased production and higher profit.

  11. Maintenance Of Chicks • Growing chicks need special care until they reach 4-5 weeks of age. • Feeding them with good quality of feed will improve their body weight. • It drives better production of eggs and meat.

  12. Egg Production In Layer Farming • Egg production in Layer Farming depends upon the care and management of birds and farms. • Good farm management can generate exceptional profit. • Around 4% of hens start laying eggs by the time they are 20 weeks old. • Others start laying when they are 21 weeks of age. • Most breeds show a high production of eggs between 26-30 weeks of age.

  13. Egg Collecting And Grading • Modern layer farming employs an automated technique for the collection of eggs. • Eggs are regularly collected and transferred from the hen house to the egg room. • The eggs are graded, checked for weight, and damaged shells.
