This framework aims to provide support for families affected by the criminal justice system through 11 broad outcomes in 4 topic areas. It encourages effective interagency working and sets out recommendations for understanding the process, preventing harm, supporting well-being, and informed practice. The framework can be tailored to the unique needs of each family and is based on the understanding that every family is unique and multiagency working is key to successful outcomes.

Involvement with the criminal justice system is a family experience. If someone is arrested, must attend court, is remanded or sentenced to custody, or is sentenced to a community penalty, this will have emotional and practical implications for that person’s family and other key relationships.
Aims of the Framework • For use across a widerange of settings and circumstances • Sets out 11 broad outcomes for supporting familiesin 4 topic areas • An ideal standard for support • Captures existing good practice and sets aspirational targets • Encourages effective interagency working
Using the Framework • The framework is designed as a reference document • Agencies may choose how to apply it • Recommendations should be tailored to the unique structure, circumstances and needs of each family • Different agencies will contribute to different outcomes in different ways

Outcomes Example • Recommendations 2.1 Understanding the Process Families understand what is happening at every stage of the criminal Justice process • Responsible Agencies 2.1.1 The information provided to families is timely and accurate.
