Primary school ( 6 grades 6 to 12 years old) • Secondary school (3 grades, 13 to 16) • Reforms coming from the ministry of education in 2013
Reformson 2013: Goals • Better quality in the basic education (primary and secondary) ending in better results in Pisa. • Get back the leadership of the Mexican goverment in the national educational system • Increase in the enrollment and the quality of the education at high schools, colleges and universities.
Teaching is on the centre of education and that is done by teachers • In general the set of teachers is not adecuate for the actual needs. Several classes are taught by unqualify teachers. • A better initial trianing is needed. • We need better teachers • We need to help them to become better teachers
Programs in 2012 • Arithmetic: teaching and learningprocess • Algebra :teaching and learningprocess • Geometry: teaching and learningprocess • Processthestatisticinformation
Observations • México (413) isbelowCanada(518), Spain (484) USA (481)and Chile (423); similar level as Uruguay and Costa Rica and aboveBrazil(391), Argentina (388), Colombia (376) y Perú (368) • 55% of the mexican students of mathematics do not reach the basic level 2 (average of OCDE: 23%) • Best mexicans reach 539 which is the average in Japan
Theworst • In 32 from the 34 OCDE countries, more than 90% of 15 years old persons are enrolled in schools. • In Mexico this index is below 70% • Union and thewayteachersthey are hire
Mathematics Competitions Concurso de Primavera and Competencia Cotorra Studentsfrom to 15 yearsold More than 500 000 (half a million) of participants Excellentresults in Olimpiada de Mayo and Olimpiada Rioplatense(firstorsecond) Olimpiada Mexicana de Matemáticas (2 golds) 2010 --- 33 2011--- 22 2012--- 31 2013--- 17
Impact of education research
Main lines of research in mathematics education in Mexico • Arithmetic: Fractionsand proportions in primaryand secondaryschool. Impact in theprogramsand therecommendationsfortheteachers (little) • Algebra: The concept of variable. Impact in theprograms(little) • Geometry: Primary and secondary school (little) • Statistics and probability (almost no impact) • Problem solving (Impact on the approach)
There is a very important centre of mathematical education research. (Cinvestav) • There are more people with a mathematics education degree than a degree in mathematics. • Their impact in mathematics education is very low.
Conclusions • There is something that need to be done since we are getting behind. • This is not only Mexico. • We need to do something together!!!!!!
