Realization andConcept of theMDSS ASFiNAGup-to-date 25th July 2006 Albert Mathis, Dipl. Ing FH, Executive MBA, AnyData AG, Switzerland albert.mathis@anydata.ch 1/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
Topics of this presentation Realization • MDSS - ASFiNAG • MDSS - Code • MDSS - Code format • Probability of forecast precipitation • Probability of forecast snowfall/snow cover • Actual Treatment • Treatment recommendations • Calibration with Mathematician • Concept was proposed for the State of Ohio Input Concept Output Expertise 2/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
MDSS – Austria Realisation 3/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
MDSS - Components Meteorological office Mobile data acquisition Weather forecast (incl. MDSS-Codes) Maintenance vehicle data Road weather information systems (RWIS) MDSS Maintenance decision support informations Measured road data 4/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
Location 1 Location 2 MDSS - System • Full system redundancy in two locations • High availability (99.8%) • 700 RWIS, • Viasala, Luft, Micks, Boschung • 150 users, • 1,600 miles of highway 5/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
MDSS – Sofware Modules Nowcasting / Forecasting Treatment recommendation Data acquisition Alarming Platform Data display / reporting Configuration 6/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
MDSS – User interface Main display • Secured log-in • Map based display • RWIS + Road weather segments • Danger level for upcoming hours • Time cursor 7/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
MDSS – User interface Other displays • History graph : • Measured data • Precipitation • Alarms • Status • Forecast accuracy • Comparision forecast / measurement 8/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
MDSS – User interface Other displays • Country summary • Still pictures • Satellite / radar pictures 9/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
MDSS - Code format • XXYYzZ • XX Change on the road surface • YY Weather, Precipitation • z Wind • Z Temperature characteristics 11/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
Example MDSS-Code 066623 • Compact high fog, locally icing drizzle • black ice • MDSS-Code = 066623 • 06 freezingrain • 66 freezing rain • 2 wind: 30-60kmh • 3 Temp. +/- 0°C. 12/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
MDSS - Codes • MDSS - Codes are generated every hour for 3h, every 6h for 32h and every 12h for 72 hours • MDSS - Codes are generated for approximately 220 sections of road (1’600 miles of highway) • MDSS - Codes communication between road manager and the weather prognosticator are very efficient. 10/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
. Probability forecast for precipitation Probability 100% 0% 13/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
Probability forecast for snowfall/snow cover (today and future) 14/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
Actual Treatment • No calibration is possible without the actual treatment. • No treatment recommendation is possible without the actual treatment. Same result as MDSS-Colorado (Winter 2004 - 2005). • Spreader - Data is necessary 15/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
Treatment recommendations 16/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
Calibration with Mathematician • Mathematician expertise helps calibrate the MDSS - System. • This expertise provides that the MDSS - System works with a proven maximum effectiveness. • This effectiveness must be accepted from the owner of the road network (e.g. 92%). The owner knows now under which conditions the MDSS - System can’t be used (e.g. radar-shadow). 17/19 MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11th August 2006
Concept was proposed for the State of Ohio Evaluation of ODOT Roadway / Weather Sensor Systems for Snow and Ice Removal Operations, Final Report June 2003 Helmut T. Zwahlen, Ph.D., Russ Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Ohio Research Institute for Transportation and the Environment (ORITE) Athens, USA.
