Glossary of Terms Urban Design: The art of making places. Urban design involves the design of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes, in villages, towns and cities, and the establishment of frameworks and processes which facilitate successful development.

Glossary of Terms Livable Communities: provide & promote civic engagement and a sense of place through safe, sustainable choices for a variety of elements that include housing, retail, transportation, education, cultural diversity and enrichment, and recreation.
Glossary of Terms Smart Growth: Invests time, attention, and resources in restoring community and vitality to center cities and older suburbs. New smart growth is more town-centered, is transit and pedestrian oriented, and has a greater mix of housing, commercial and retail uses.
Sustainable Design: Design which meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to achieve their own needs and aspirations.
Glossary of Terms Density: A standard measure of units per area. High-density areas have more homes and businesses per unit of land than low-density areas.
Glossary of Terms Mixed-Use Development: Development that features a mix of commercial, office, residential and/or civic uses.
Glossary of Terms Accessibility: Providing for ease, safety and choice when moving to and through places.
Glossary of Terms Overlay District: Zoning designation that lies atop/supersedes the zoning for an individual lot; usually defining an area with special design requirements or characteristics.
Glossary of Terms Streetscape: The components of a street- street lights, street trees, traffic signals, traffic information signs, street identification signs, street and sidewalk materials. Taken together, the streetscape plays an important role in creating the image of a city.
