Credit 2 Objectives:- • To understand the basic principles of structural mechanics so that it forms basis for study of structural design. Methodology:- lectures & computation exercises. S.No. CONTENTS Historic evolution of walls , post, & beams, arch , vault, dome, suspended structures, trusses & skyscrapers 1. Structural Efficiency, Types of loads:- dead load, live load , seismic loads, wind load & basic concepts for horizontal & vertical structures. 2. Basic Structure Systems, Basic Concepts of Strength, Stiffness, Stability Synergy & Rupture in Horizontal & Vertical St. Systems 3. Suggested Readings: 1. Structure 6th edition by Daniel shodek. 2. Structure mechanics by Harbhajansingh. 3. Strength of materials by R.S. khurmi 4. Structure mechanics for architects by Harbhajansingh 5.Architectural Structure by G.G. Schierle • Guidelines for teachers:- • All structural design work shall be supplemented by structural drawings. • Submissions and tests as per university rules. • Students will take up one architectural design exercise for structural design.

S.No. CONTENTS Horizontal Systems:- Bending Concepts & its effects of overhang in joists , beams & girders. 1. Virendeel girders, folded plates & cylindrical shells. Tensile resistance in horizontal systems, stayed structures, suspended structures. 2. Cable trusses , anticlastic structures, saddle shapes, wave shapes ,arch shapes , point shapes pneumatic structures 3. Suggested Readings: 1. Structure 6th edition by Daniel shodek. 2..
