  3. President Abraham Lincoln opposed the secession of the Southern states from the Union (U.S.) by arguing that the U.S. government was a union of people and not of states. President Abraham Lincoln (1861–1865)

  4. Lincoln justified fighting the Civil War because he believed his oath of office required him to defend and preserve the Union. South (Confederacy) attacks and seizes Fort Sumter in South Carolina (April 12–14, 1861); Civil War begins

  5. The Civil War occurred from 1861 to 1865 and resulted in over 600,000 Americans being killed by diseases or new military technologies. Battle of Gettysburg (July 1–3, 1863); over 45,000 casualties

  6. During the Civil War, the North had more human resources and war materials. North army (Union/United States)

  7. However, the South had superior military leadership. General Robert E. Lee General Stonewall Jackson Confederate President Jefferson Davis 

  8. In 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to free all of the slaves in theSouth and help the North win the Civil War by adding a humanitarian objective to it. Signing the Emancipation Proclamation (1863)

  9. By 1865, the North was able to win the Civil War after it employed better military leaders and strategies. (North) General Ulysses S. Grant General Lee surrenders to General Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia (April 9, 1865)
