Overall Guidelines • Written Response should be at least two paragraphs yet as many paragraphs as needed.
Each paragraph should contain the following sentences: • Topic Sentence • Detail Sentence • Evidence/Direct Quote • Explanatory Sentence (Depending on the question, you may repeat detail, evidence, explainas necessary) • Clincher (Restate Topic Sentence) • Repeat
1. Read the Prompt Carefully • At least two times. • Determine what the question is asking.
2. Circle and Underline Key Words • Verbs – What action is the question asking you to complete? (describe, explain, analyze, etc.) • Words that are key to the question/content. Based on this scene, describe how the characters feel about the king. Use examples from the play to support your answers.
3. Actively Read the Passage.(if applicable) • Use a literacy strategy. • Underline, notes in the margin, highlight, write questions, etc.
4. Write Your Topic Sentence • Restate the question. (If the question allows, the topic sentence of each paragraph should clearly state what the written response should prove. ) Based on this scene, the characters feel both love and respect for the king. (specific) Based on this scene, it is clear that the characters have strong feelings for the king.
5. Find Evidence to Support your Answer • Sentence # 3. (At this point skip detail sentence) • Relevant specific details/ direct quotes drawn from the content/text that prove your argument. • The specific details/quotes must be introduced (The excerpt states, “……”.)
6. Write a Detail Sentence • Sentence # 2 (in between Topic Sentence and Detail/Quote) • This sentence should connect your Topic Sentence to your Detail/Quote. It gives more clarity and information about your answer/argument that you are writing about.
7. Write an Explanatory Sentence • Sentence # 4 • Explain how the detail/quote proves your topic sentence. • This is the sentence where you are telling the audience why you are right. • Written in 3rd person.
8. Write a Clincher Sentence • Sentence # 5 • Begin with a transition (ex: therefore). • Restate (not rewrite) your topic sentence. • Strategically repeat key words from your topic sentence in your clincher. (Therefore, it was obvious the king was loved by his people.)
9. Repeat Steps 4 - 8(Paragraph 2) • Repeat the same steps for paragraph 2. • Begin your topic sentence with a transition (ex: another way, also, etc.) • The people also felt respect for the king. • The clincher for paragraph 2 should strategically mention the key words from both topic sentences. Clincher should begin with a transition (ex: clearly, ultimately, etc) Clearly, the people lovedand respected the king.
10. READ, REREAD, PROOFREAD It is expected that your written response will be of PROFESSIONAL QUALITY when it is handed in.
